Public Funding for Obesity Surgery

The Canterbury District Health Board have commissioned Christchurch Weight Loss Surgery to undertake the publicly funded obesity surgery. This program is very limited in numbers and referrals are controlled by the South Island Alliance and Christchurch Hospital. If you would like to be considered for public funded obesity surgery then:

Contact your GP to be assessed for appropriateness of obesity surgery;
Ask your GP to send a referral through Health Pathways for bariatric surgery;
Your referral will be assessed and a General Surgery Outpatient Clinic appointment at Christchurch Hospital may be sent to you. Here you will be consulted by an obesity surgeon;
If selected for public funded obesity surgery you will be referred to Christchurch Weight Loss Surgery for entry into the program.

Please note that Christchurch Weight Loss Surgery does not select patients for the program. There is no advantage in contacting our offices before being assessed by Christchurch Hospital.
